Whether dealing with the delicate balance of pain management, identifying patterns of abuse, or treating addiction, nurse practitioners and physician assistants play an important role in addressing the opioid crisis. In addition to the resources in the CME section below are listed Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant-specific resources.

  • The American Association of Nurse Practitioners offers resources on Opioids and CE in Pain Management and related topics.
  • The American Academy of Physician Assistants has CE activities on prescribing and opioids.

In addition, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are now eligible to become waivered buprenorphine prescribers to treat opioid use disorder.  This waiver requires 24 hours of course work available free of charge from the Providers’ Clinical Support System (PCSS).  Email the PCSS for more information.
