There are a numerous tools available to help busy practitioners manage their patients who require opioid medications, comply with Board of Medicine regulations, and integrate evidence-based guidelines into their practices.

  • The Medical Society of Virginia has an extensive listing of physician resources and prescribing tools on their website. These resources include an MME calculator, a pocket guide for tapering opioids, addiction screening tools and addiction treatment locators.
  • The Center for Disease Control also provides online resources to prescribers, based on their March 2016 Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. CDC offers tools for clinicians, including a mobile app, as well as factsheets and other resources for patients.
  • Oregonpainguidance.org offers a Tapering Flow Sheet detailing best practices for tapering the prescription of benzodiazepine and other opioids.
  • Oregon Pain Guidance maintains a number of Tools for Professionals that include flow sheets, assessment tools, information on laboratory screenings and a wide array of other materials.
