In response to 2017 legislation, the Board of Medicine has enacted emergency regulations on the prescribing of opioids for pain, as well as the prescribing of buprenorphine for the treatment of substance abuse.  These regulations were approved on March 15, 2017, and will remain in effect until they are replaced by permanent regulations (no later than September 14, 2018).

The emergency regulations apply to doctors of Medicine, Osteopathy, and Podiatry, as well as Physician Assistants and, soon, Nurse Practitioners.

You can download a copy of the regulations governing the prescribing of Opioids and Buprenorphine, or view an FAQ to get quick information on the regulations. Also, here is a letter from Board director Dr. William Harp summarizing the intent and content of the new regulations.
